Question:

Is my DSL modem compatible with Windows XP?

Response:

The following information is provided by Qwest. This information can be found in its entirety at www.qwest.com/dsl

Qwest DSL and Windows XP

Microsoft has introduced a new PC operating system called Windows XP. The Intel 2100, 2200 and 3200 DSL modems will not support this product without a software upgrade. We recommend that you do not install the Windows XP operating system until after you have been able to upgrade the software for these Intel modem models using the software upgrade that will soon be available.

Intel has developed software upgrades for the 2100 and the 3200 modems and is still working on a solution for the 2200. The Qwest Lab has made the testing of these software upgrades its top priority. The Intel software upgrades will be posted on the Qwest DSL Web site at www.qwest.com/dsl as soon as the lab testing has been successfully completed.

Qwest DSL customers with Intel modems 2100, 2200 or 3200 who install Windows XP on their PC without upgrading their modem, will find that their PC and modem cannot communicate. This will result in the customer being unable to access his/her DSL connection. If this happens, the customer will need to replace the Windows XP with the original operating system and reconfigure the modem to restore service.

The attached letter will begin mailing to our customers Tuesday, 11-13 in staggared quantities. The Intel 2100 upgrade is available now (this covers 75% of our base) with the 2200 and 3200 soon to follow from Intel.

Customers with the Cisco 678 or 675 modems who have installed Windows XP will not be affected in the same manner as customers using an Intel model. However, customers using the Cisco 675 or 678 external modems and who use the Commander application may need to re-install the Commander software after installing Windows XP. Only customers who are modem-pooled customers and have the Cisco 675 must have the Commander software installed in order for their DSL service to work. The Commander software needed to complete this reinstallation process will soon be posted on www.qwest.com/dsl/tech support.

Qwest Tier One Support at 1-800-247-7285 will be able to answer any additional questions regarding Qwest DSL and Windows XP.
